The Province covers a very important role in the preservation and
improvement of the local natural environment. In fact, it has many
competences, such as soil defence, protection and improvement of
the environment and prevention of natural calamities.
It is also responsible for the safeguard and improvement of water
and energy resources as well as for the protection of flora and
fauna and for the management of parks and natural reserves.
It deals with the organization of waste disposal and controls water
discharges and air emissions.
The Province has adhered to the Aalborg Charter with a Council decision,
sharing hereby the principles and criteria of Agenda XXI. Agenda
XXI is the UN reference plan of action for sustainable development
for the twentieth century, defined by the UN Conference on Development
and the Environment of Rio de Janeiro in 1992 and undersigned by
180 governments.
All current administrative procedures, preparatory for the approval
of plans in the environmental field, are inspired by the Agenda
XXI criteria.
